It is estimated that 1 out of every 20 people in the total population experience incontinence at some point in their lives. The condition can be embarrassing, expensive and often uncomfortable.
Many studies over the years have analysed the impact of incontinence on mental wellbeing. One specific study in 2013 set out to explore the relationship between mental health and incontinence. The study revealed that three specific psychosocial aspects of urinary incontinence can affect mental health. These aspects were living with incontinence, management of incontinence and attitudes about incontinence. It was concluded that an increased awareness of the major psychosocial issues that can influence incontinence and mental health may contribute to a better management of the condition. Physiologically unpleasant for individuals, incontinence can be emotionally demeaning, decreasing self-concept and perceived body image. In addition to this study, an internet survey in January 2013 set out to investigate the relationship between female urinary incontinence and the happiness of individuals. This involved an analysis comparing those with incontinence and those without incontinence to determine whether any differences in wellbeing were modified by demographic factors, specific wellbeing domain or exercise. Two thousand four hundred and three women completed the survey; 1203 who reported having incontinence and 1200 who reported never being incontinent. The results showed that lower well-being is observed in those with incontinence. Lifestyle heavily influences well-being, and those with incontinence who exercise less frequently or have sex infrequently are especially likely to report lower well-being. Wellbeing decreases as a function of the indirect measures of the severity of incontinence.
The truth is that you do not have to give up living an active lifestyle simply because you have incontinence. Although incontinence is unpleasant, there are things you can do to make the condition easier to manage. The products available in the market for managing incontinence are improving rapidly, with greater variety and features than ever before. Many people become discouraged from wearing incontinence products as they are scared of being uncomfortable, or are worried about the product being noticed by other people. The solution to this is investing in incontinence products that are designed to feel like normal underwear and are as discreet as possible. Using products that allow you to stay active and live your ideal lifestyle can improve your overall wellbeing.
Attends Pull Ons are an example of a range of products that are designed just like normal underwear and allow you to stay active with incontinence. The products range from Pull-Ons 3 for very light conditions to Pull-Ons 8 for more heavy/severe incontinence.
