Managing Multiple Sclerosis and Incontinence
Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) can be unpredictable and challenging, and managing incontinence can add to those challenges. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, up to 80 percent of people with MS will experience incontinence1, making it one of the most common symptoms associated with the disease. Fortunately, there are steps that can be taken to manage incontinence and improve quality of life. Below are some tips for managing MS and incontinence:
Tip 1: Maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight can put additional pressure on the bladder and worsen incontinence symptoms. In addition, carrying extra weight can make it more difficult to manage other MS symptoms such as fatigue and weakness. A diet that is low in fat and calories, combined with regular exercise, can help maintain a healthy weight.
Tip 2: Perform Kegel exercises regularly. Kegel exercises help tone the muscles around the bladder, which can lead to improved bladder control. To do a Kegel exercise, squeeze the pelvic floor muscles as if you are trying to stop urinating midstream. Hold for 10 seconds, then relax for 10 seconds. Repeat 10 times, three times per day
Tip 3: Use incontinence products. Incontinence products such as pads, liners, and protective underwear can help absorb leaks and keep clothing clean and dry. There are many different types and brands of products available, so it may take some trial and error to find what works best. Be sure to change products frequently to avoid skin irritation. In addition, certain products may be covered by Medicaid or private insurance plans
People with MS often experience incontinence, but there are steps that can be taken to manage the symptoms and improve quality of life. By maintaining a healthy weight, performing Kegel exercises regularly, and using incontinence products, people with MS can better manage their incontinence symptoms.
