As Autumn is fast approaching, we are heading towards the scarves, jackets and windy weather territory. This change in weather not only means it is important to stay warm, but additionally requires you to pay close attention to keeping your skin moisturised and cared for.
Whilst it is important to ensure your skin is not dehydrated during the summer, it is equally important to keep your skin healthy during windy and cold weather. As skin health care expert Debbie Thomas asserts, “By using the Autumn months to rejuvenate and repair your skin you are giving it the best chance to look glowing and healthy as we move into the festive season and the colder winter weather”. Everyday pollution and stress can also disrupt skin’s hydration leading to sensitivity and a loss of radiance. When this is combined with windy and cool weather, skin can easily become dry and unhealthy.
If you suffer from incontinence, taking good care of your skin becomes even more important. The intact healthy skin provides a natural barrier which prevents bacterial growth. In patients with urinary incontinence, the urea in urine can change the skin environment, encouraging bacteria to grow. Skin areas most at risk are around the anus, the genitals, between the buttocks and the inner thighs. Damp, warm skin is, unfortunately, a good place for bacteria, including fungal infections and urinary tract infections. In faecal incontinence, the faeces contain harmful enzymes that break down the skin’s barrier, allowing bacterial and fungal growth. When both urine and faeces come into contact with the skin they change the natural PH, turning it into an alkaline. This causes the skin to become reddened and to break down. This skin irritation is known as maceration, incontinence associated dermatitis (IAD) or excoriation, which can be very painful for those suffering from incontinence. This can be distressing, uncomfortable and socially isolating. If the skin is not cleansed and protected from exposure to urine and faeces, this can lead to the development of a lesion. It is therefore important to implement a skin care programme to avoid the development of lesions and break down of the skin.
You can stay hydrated this Autumn with cleansing products to keep your skin soft and cleansed. Incontinence cleansing products are an important part of the management of your incontinence condition. These products include protective skin barrier products, gentle cleansers and moisturisers. Products designed for cleansing are specially formulated to deal with skin irritations resulting from incontinence leakages. The aim is to keep the skin clean and dry. Skin cleansing products are important for treating those with incontinence to prevent sores and infections. For caregivers or individuals with incontinence, cleansing products are a must for daily use in maintaining proper skin protection and health.
